A representative of the city’s Solid Waste Resource Program met with residents on November 29 to announce the results of the clear bag waste collection program trial which started in late June.   Hilary Hayes told those gathered that Spinnaker Arms residents drastically reduced the amount of waste going to the landfill.

Of the total waste collected from the building during the trial period, the percentage of garbage decreased from75% to 53%, while materials redirected to recycling and green bins increased from 25% to 47%.  A practical example of the impact of these changes is illustrated by the amount of materials ending up in the black bins.  Before the program started, residents were filling four black bins (garbage) every pick up day; now this has been reduced to two bins per pick up.

Good job residents!  And thank you to our superintendent, Donald d’Entremont, for his leadership during this trial.  While there is still more to do to reduce our impact on our city’s environment, these are excellent first steps.  A guide to what trash should go where is attached.
