On October 13, 2021, our property management company, NovaCorp Properties, sent out a memo with information from Halifax Solid Waste informing residents that starting Monday, November 1, 2021, Halifax Solid Waste is implementing the mandatory use of clear bags for all regular garbage in condominiums in HRM. Halifax Solid Waste is making the change to improve adherence to By-law S-600.

Starting November 1, 2021, garbage placed in containers other than clear bags may be subject to a warning and/or rejection of the garbage. Failure to comply with the mandate may also result in penalties to our condo corporation.

The memo from NovaCorp Properties also contained important reminders to residents about some of the sorting rules:

  • No plastic of any kind in the green bin
  • Blue bags must be used to collect all clean glass, tin, plastic containers, and beverage containers
  • Clean, dry paper and cardboard must be kept separate from other recyclables
  • Styrofoam, plastic utensils, and takeout/coffee cups are not recyclable and should be placed in a clear garbage bag.

Not sure about a particular item you need to dispose of? Halifax Solid Waste has a handy lookup tool, What Goes Where?, so you can quickly get an answer.

Didn’t receive a sorting guide earlier this year? Also on the Halifax Solid Waste website, The Sorting Guide for Condominiums is available in different languages:

English
French
Arabic
Farsi
Simplified Chinese

If you have specific questions or would like to receive information over the phone directly from Halifax Solid Waste, residents are invited to contact the Solid Waste Resouces department of HRM at 902-490-5960 (option 1, then option 2) or email them at wasteless@halifax.ca.

The board thanks all residents for their continued support and adherence to HRM bylaws.
